ABOUT SOCSA's $4 MILLION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR A NEW PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Dana Hills HS Performing Arts Center Compilation as presented on March 2 2009: Facilities Workshop to CUSD Board by WLC Architects Inc This has been an amazing couple of years for SOCSA. SOCSA's Artistic Director, Mr. Ray Woods, received Arts Orange County's 2007 Outstanding Arts Educator of the Year award on behalf of SOCSA. In April of 2008, the CUSD Trustees voted unanimously approving the acceptance of a $3 million Career Technical Education (CTE) match grant from the State of California to help fund a new $13 million, 475-seat Performing Arts Center for SOCSA on the campus of Dana Hills High School. 3 other CUSD board votes have passed 7-0 in support of the completion of this project, with the latest in March 2009. CUSD has identified $6 million in district facilities funding, leaving us short $4 million to complete the project.

The proposed Dana Hills High School Performing Arts Center will feature:
  • Theater seating for 475
  • 65' high fly loft and fly system
  • 2,000 sq ft stage
  • An orchestra pit
  • Modern cooling/heating system to keep the theater at a consistant temperature during performances
  • Choir classroom
  • Instrumental classroom with practice rooms
  • Spacious backstage area
  • Digital sound recording and light studio
  • A black box theater for rehearsals and small performances
  • Classrooms for stagecraft and more.
In the past year, SOCSA productions have rented space at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana (for SOCSA's Opera Night Gala and Performance), the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (for SOCSA's Showcase year-end art exhibit and performance) and other local venues to accomodate the large crowds for SOCSA Performances, some reaching 800+, and it is time for a new, state-of-the-art performing arts center to be built on the campus of Dana Hills High School. Each production required coordination and many hours of work from staff and coaches, volunteers and parents, and the students themselves.

In its own state-of-the-art facility, SOCSA will flourish.

The SOCSA program will finally have the space and the facilities to grow and expand into the next decade ? and beyond.

In 2008, the SOCSA Foundation embarked on an aggressive capital campaign to raise $4 million over the next 3 years to help shore up the remaining funds needed to complete our dream of a new $13 million Performing Arts Center for SOCSA students of the future. Now... we need YOUR help.

OCT 6, 2008: CUSD TRUSTEES APPROVE $768K FOR DHHS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

SOCSA students hold up the HELP BUILD THE THEATER banner outside the CUSD board meeting

We are glad to report that due to YOUR input, the CUSD trustees voted 7-0 to approve the next round of funding for the district's architects to complete the construction drawings and other related items at a cost of $769,418.00. This approved funding will see the project through for the next 12-14 months... all the way to the California Division of State Architect (DSA) approval by Dec 2009. This should ensure that the $3 million CTE grant money will be provided to Dana Hills High School in Dec 2009. This is due to the hundreds of eMails, letters and phone calls from YOU and support from the City of Dana Point. For this, we say thank you... more to come, but for now we celebrate this amazing support of arts education at Dana Hills High School. :-)

TOP 11 REASONS WHY DANA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL
NEEDS A NEW PERFORMING ARTS CENTER:

1) Dana Hills was awarded a $3 million match grant for a new Performing Arts Center from the Career Technical Education Facilities Program (CTEFP) and CUSD must complete several steps that will cost the district money before Dec 2009 or this $3 million grant will be lost forever.

2) To provide the best learning environment for career technical education for the performing arts at our local public high school.

3) South Orange County residents love the performing arts and this new venue will allow for year-round arts entertainment from a variety of sources, including local theater groups with no facilities of their own.

4) Guests of the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and Marriott will have live theater entertainment options while visiting Dana Point.

5) The converted lecture hall, now called the Porthole Theater, is 35 years old and not ADA compliant.

6) Provides SOCSA with a performing arts facility that matches the caliber of talented teachers and students of the SOCSA Academy.

7) Provides a non-denominational place for hundreds of community members to congregate for meetings.

8) Provides SOCSA a secure facility to store its growing collection of pianos, instruments, costumes and other valuables.

9) Demonstrates that the community recognizes the importance of the arts in education.

10) Eliminates the need to rent facilities twenty-five miles away and manage the transportation of students, equipment and faculty to those facilities for any special event.

11) Will help increase enrollment among current and prospective Dana Hills students while helping to modernize an outdated campus.
